How Lobtrans Dumped Its Employees

Nancy (not her real name) has worked for Lobatse Cash Store - owners of Lobtrans long haulage trucks - for 25 years.

She saw the store grow from a wholesale into one of the biggest fuel distribution companies in the country. She saw the company move from small apartments into a big building. But on Thursday she was told that her employer is under liquidation and that she is effectively jobless.

By the look of her face, Nancy is in her late fifties and prospects of finding another job are very slim. "We were not prepared. Right now I have debts; I owe banks and furniture shops. I have to pay for policies, rent, and school fees for my children and we are just told that we are unemployed, just like this," she said as she shook her head.
