How I beat the FMD checkpoint

MATSILOJE: Government has spent P94 million to eliminate foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the Veterinary Zone Six and Seven regions since last year's outbreak of the disease in the area.

The intensive exercise to eliminate the disease in the vast area was meant to help the country attain the status of an FMD-free country so that it can sell its beef to the lucrative European Union market.

The P94 million funded several control measures that include the stamping out of all infected and in-contact animals, cleaning and disinfection of the affected area. In some cases vaccination is done to suppress the FMD virus. In Botswana, apart from killing all infected animals and vaccinating them, movement of cattle and people is controlled to stem the spread of FMD.
