How BDP blurred the line between party and state

Although both Tanzania's Jakaya Kikwete and South Africa's Kgalema Motlanthe were invited by the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), everything changed as soon as they landed in Gaborone on Friday.

They were treated to state functions complete with the characteristic state protocol. They were even escorted to their hotels with the Botswana Police Service and the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) resources.

The police and BDF resources were deployed along Gaborone roads on both Friday and Saturday. Observers could not help but be curious as to whether government paid for the two leaders' hotel bills as well. The BDF and police escorts could also be seen at the Gaborone International Conference Centre (GICC) where both leaders' entourage were accommodated. Kikwete stayed at the government guest house, while Motlanthe was accommodated at Gaborone Sun.
