High drama at GCC

There was high drama at the Gaborone City Council (GCC) chambers yesterday when councillors engaged in a heated exchange over the mayor's speech.

The confrontation resulted in a walkout by Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) councillors. Tempers flared immediately after new mayor Haskins Nkayigwa told councillors that he will not make his inaugural speech to the full council because he had just ascended to the post.

He said the speech item should be removed from the agenda "because we (mayor and deputy) took office yesterday (Tuesday), therefore we don't have a speech to give".
