High death rate cause of declining population growth - Maganu

Should Botswana be concerned by a declining fertility rate? Former Ministry of Health permanent secretary Dr Edward Maganu writes that the most critical factor in Botswana is mortality.

"Our population growth has slowed down mainly because of high death rates, largely because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the decline in fertility playing a lesser role at this stage," he added.

He said that the emphasis on declining fertility rates, as the cause of declining population growth, is a bit misplaced, explaining that population growth is the difference between birth and death rates, and immigration.
