High Court orders ministry to pay students' allowances

The High Court has given the Ministry of Education and Skills Development two days to pay the allowances of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology students.

"The decision of the respondents not to pay the applicants and other Limkokwing University (students) their allowances for June and July 2009 is hereby reviewed, corrected and or set aside," Justice Maruping Dibotelo ordered yesterday. Early this month, the Student Representative Council (SRC) of Limkokwing University engaged Monthe Marumo Attorneys over the sudden stoppage of their living allowance by the Ministry of Education.  On Friday, the students through their lawyer wrote a letter to the ministry complaining that they had been assured through a June 1, 2009 letter, signed by the deputy permanent secretary Golekanye Setume, that they would be paid allowances for the June and July vacation and that their accounts would be credited last Friday.

The lawyer representing the students stated that they hold the ministry to the undertaking contained in the letter. He demanded that the students' accounts be credited last week Tuesday and when this did not happen, the matter was subsequently reviewed by the High Court in favour of the students.
