Hiccups at Maun Airport expansion project

The mammoth task of expanding the Maun Airport is anticipated to cost the government millions of Pula but the project is bogged down in unforeseen problems caused by the slow pace of allocation of plots and complaints of disgruntled residents about insufficient compensation.

Speaking at a full council meeting on Tuesday, NWDC chairman, John Benn informed the councillors that though the relocation exercise was to be completed in June this year, only 900 people were allocated plots at Disaneng, from a total of 1,595 families affected and 100 people have queried their compensation money.

According to NWDC boss, the expansion of the airport is expected to cost the government P395 million with an additional P45 million in compensation to the affected families and another P25 million for supervision of consultancy services. A total of P45 million was paid to NWDC to provide services at the new place and the whole project should be completed by 2011.
