Health Workers Are Stressed Out

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Kolaatamo Malefho has said that a need assessment conducted among health workers revealed that 89 percent of the respondents were experiencing work related stress so they need to access health services and as well be provided with the necessary coping skills.

Speaking during the Selebi-Phikwe Hospital Workplace Wellness launch, Malefho said a commitment has been made by government to facilitate the provision of workplace wellness service for the workforce. He added that the components of this programme include occupational health and safety strategies to create an enabling environment for productivity, staff morale initiatives to boost their self esteem and work ethics as well as health screening treatment and care among others.

He indicated that the health workforce in Botswana is faced with numerous challenges extending from the HIV/AIDS scourge to co-existing opportunistic diseases such as tuberculosis and further said in addition to these problems the pattern of ill health is also showing an increase in lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer.
