Health PS warns hospital superintendents

The Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Health has slammed hospital superintendents for not making sure that facilities are up to standard. Newman Kahiya told a two-day meeting of superintendents at Phakalane Golf Estate yesterday that they will dismiss or reprimand those who fail to meet standards.

The meeting is meant to come up with some service level agreements and checklists to improve performance quality of hospital services. "The era of talking is over. If you do well you will be rewarded and if not, you will get a demotion or termination of employment. This is not a threat," Kahiya said.

He explained that the checklists will be used by auditors that will visit hospitals unannounced to check the standards. "We are going to use those standards and checklists to reprimand you or terminate your employment. We know that if you cannot keep the hospital clean and patients come, they may get infected in the facility," he said. The permanent secretary stated that the standards and the checklists would be a step towards the accreditation of hospitals in the near future.
