Hawkers, Plaza chiefs in court tussle

A decision by management of Market Development Company (Market Plaza) to evict scores of Gaborone hawkers, allegedly refusing to pay arent at the congested bus rank mall, has turned into a court battle.

The company's lawyer, Plato Gaoboi, and lawyer Dick Bayford, acting for some of the affected hawkers, are set to fight it out in court.

After an agreement between the Gaborone City Council and the company for the establishment of a 'hawkers plaza' comprising 70 lock-up stalls and 60 casual stalls, the development company is seeking court intervention to kick out Joseph Kebakile, Segametsi Gaebolae and many other small Hawkers doing business at the 'hawkers plaza'.
The company's director, Isang Gabegwe contends that the Hawkers are failing to honour a tenancy agreement signed after the company refurbished and developed the place.
