Hangman Returns After A Year

The Department of Prisons and Rehabilitation has confirmed the hanging of death row inmate Sepeni Thubisane Popo on Friday morning.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Anthony Mokento confirmed on Friday afternoon that "it is true Popo was hanged this morning". He was found guilty of murdering Boitshwarelo Balotlegi in Molepolole in 2004 for ritual purposes. Popo was in the  company of two others who were acquitted by the High Court last year. Popo is the 39th person to be hanged since Botswana got her independence from Britain in 1966.

The last time a murderer (Oteng Ping) was hanged was in 2005. The highest number of people hanged was between 1995 and 2003 when four people were sent to the gallows each year.
