Grow sorghum this season - MoA

Farmers have been advised to grow sorghum this ploughing season in the face of predicted hot temperatures that make it risky to grow crops that need a lot of water.

Addressing the media last week, the newly appointed Director of Crop Production in the Ministry of Agriculture, Molatlhegi Modise, said that sorghum can withstand hot weather as compared to maize.

"People usually go for maize but it would be a risky choice, especially when rainfall is not above 400 millimetres in the area," he said.  He explained that in a season like this when rainfall is predicted to be minimal, sorghum should be the choice. He added that if farmers grow sorghum in large numbers, they would be able to beat the Quelea bird, (Tlhaga) which usually troubles the few farmers who grow sorghum.
