Greater Gaborone Taps Dry Up :: Mmegi Online

Equipment failure at a water treatment plant has thrown the Greater Gaborone into another prolonged period of thirst. The thirst is in its second week and Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) could not say when exactly the problem will be resolved.

In their public notice on Friday the WUC said the affected areas are Gabane, Tloaneng, Mmopane, Mogoditshane, Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB), Mmopane Block 1, Metsimotlhabe, Ledumadumane, Kumakwane, Gaborone West Phase 1 and 4, Block 5 and 9, Mmatseta and Gakuto. The situation has resulted in water rationing in the Greater Gaborone, as some residents can go without water for as long as two days.

“This is due to equipment failure at one of our water treatment plants supplying these areas. The corporation is working around the clock to restore supply,” it said in a statement. WUC further explained that water supply shortage would continue until further notice due to power outages experienced in some of its distribution and treatment plants. However, according to some of the angry residents from the affected areas, their taps have been running dry since Monday last week.
