FRANCISTOWN: The police in Tutume are investigating an incident in which a 57-year-old man of Tutume village allegedly hanged himself to death after being accused of allegedly abusing his 12-year-old granddaughter.

According to Tutume Police Station Commander Superintendent Lesego Kgosiemang, they are investigating an incident in which a 57-year-old man has hanged himself at Selolwane ward. He said on February 10 they received a report from a 55-year-old woman stating that his 57-year-old partner is abusing their 12-year-old granddaughter. He indicated that the complainant pleaded for the law enforcement officers to intervene in the matter. Kgosiemang stated that after the report, a manhunt for the 57-year-old man was launched but the police officers' search could not bear fruit. “Later in the morning the next day, we received a report from a passer-by indicating that they have seen someone hanging from a tree, lifeless in the bushes. The body was later identified as the 57-year-old man we were searching for,” added the Tutume police boss.

He said that they are still yet to determine the type of abuse inflicted on the victim as the complainant only told the police to assist as the old man was mistreating the child. As of now funeral preparations are underway and the police have given the family time to grief and for the deceased to be laid to rest. He stated after the funeral that's when they will be able to investigate even further on the matter by questioning the complainant and victims on how his grandfather abused her.
