Gaborone Private Hospital yesterday refused to operate on a man with a cracked skull unless he paid an initial deposit of P10,000.

Isaac Seleka on BOPMAS medical aid expressed shock that the hospital refused to attend to his cracked skull until he paid a 10 percent fee, which amounted to P10,000. He said that he did not have that kind of money when he got to the hospital and had hoped that as usual, the hospital would attend to him and allow him to pay later.

However, he was shocked that despite his sorry state, the hospital sent him back home to get the money, before they could attend to him.Seleka encountered his ordeal on Saturday night when two gentlemen attacked him as he slowed down at the humps on the road between Metsimotlhabe and Bokamoso Private Hospital. He desribed how he was hit by a stone while another man stabbed him with a knife on the head. The young men managed to get money and other valuables from him when he could not drive due to the injuries on the head. However, he was later taken to Gaborone Private Hospital where he was immediately hospitalised. He said that he was told on Sunday that he had suffered a broken skull and would therefore need to undergo operation immediately.
