Botswana's failure to ratify the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights on the establishment of an African Court means that the government is not serious about promoting and protecting human rights, a human rights lawyer has said.

Speaking at the African Court Coalition Roundtable last Friday in Tlokweng, The Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA) director Uyapo Ndadi said this means that Batswana cannot access the court and that their dreams of being judges of the African Court will not be realised because Botswana is not a member of the court.

"Some of us who aspire to be judges, the door is shut unless we change our nationalities," he said. The court became operational in 2006 with the appointment of 11 judges in Khartoum, Sudan. It is now based in Arusha, Tanzania.
