Govt to spend P5.1bn on tertiary education in 2016

Demand for tertiary education is set to escalate by 2016 based on the increase in the number of graduates of the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGSCE) and equivalent school leaving examinations.

The Tertiary Education Council (TEC) projects that candidates will increase from 42,309 in 2012 to 53,819 in 2016.New tertiary entrants will increase from 12,693 in 2012 to 16,146 in 2016. This was revealed at the ongoing TEC Conference, which began yesterday in Gaborone themed Financing Tertiary Education in a Resource-Limited Environment.

The conference, which has convened educators from Botswana, China, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Lesotho, South Africa and Uganda, ends tomorrow. As a result, government would need about P5.1 billion per annum to finance both the students and the public tertiary education institutions then, translating to an average of 4.1 percent of the GDP.
