Govt spent over P1million on CKGR case

Government has spent P1 083 220.38 in a civil case in which Basarwa dragged it to the High Court for forcefully relocating them from the Central Kgalagadi Game Reserve (CKGR). The case lasted for three years.

Minister for Justice, Defence and Security, Phandu Skelemani told Parliament yesterday that the money was spent to pay for traveling, accommodation, meals and all the necessary expenses for attorneys representing the Government. Other expenses were incurred when court staff and judges travelled to Gugamma, Kikao, Mothomelo, Metsiamanong, Gope, Molapo and Old Xade settlements to conduct an inspection.  He was responding to a question from MP for Letlhakeng West Filbert Nagafela.

One of the witnesses, Dr Kathleen Alexander was paid P474 957.80 as professional fees; P463 361.88 for her accommodation and P45 590 as transport costs. For other witnesses, P93 954.90 and P5 355.50 were spent as accommodation and meals, and transport costs respectively. The Minister informed the House that Government continues to incur more costs since Basarwa attorneys are now challenging the last year judgement demanding to be paid costs of the case.
