Govt shuns calls for tribal equality

In a development notable for its dramatic irony, two ministers from so-called minority tribes withheld their support from a motion calling on the government to ratify the 1966 United Nations International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Phandu Skelemani and the Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry, Maxwell Motowane turned their back on another of their lot, Gilson Saleshando (S/Phikwe West), who sponsored the motion seeking tribal equality.

Saleshando is a MoYei, Skelemani a Kalanga, while Motowane is a Mokgalagadi, ethnic group which all fall outside the ambit of what the Constitution of Botswana used to refer to as "principal tribes."
