Govt scheme puts 84,000 hectares under the plough

The Director of Crop Production in the Ministry of Agriculture, Molatlhegi Modise, estimates that 84, 000 hectares of land has come under the plough this season and says the number is likely to increase after the ploughing season was extended to February 7 for farmers south of the Dibete cordon fence and up to February 17 for north of Dibete.

Modise says records show that 42, 000 hectares of land have already been measured, while work to measure another 42, 000 hectares continue. But due to the rains being late, planted land will fall short of the 150, 000 hectares targeted by the government.

Modise says his department has supplied seeds to cover 230, 000 hectares and registered 2, 000 tractors to hire from individual owners for use in the current ploughing season.
