Govt probes SA referrals 'rip-off'

The Botswana government may have to ask for millions of Pula back from South African referral hospitals in the future.

Suspicious that the country might have been ripped off in the past few years, Botswana has engaged a South African company to investigate if the millions that the Ministry of Health has paid to South African referral hospitals were justifiable, Health Hub Coordinator at the ministry headquarters Gabolekwe Tlogelang has revealed.

Tlogelang told Mmegi in Gaborone yesterday that while the country continues to refer patients to South Africa, government has engaged a managed care company to assess the services that patients were given and if the government was fairly charged.
