The common problems on Botswana roads such as potholes, poor drainage, and poor workmanships could be a thing of the past as the Department of Roads moves to replace its problematic road construction manual, with a new one that seeks to address such challenges.

The old Botswana Roads Design Manual and the Standard Specification for Road and Bridge Works that has been in service for more than 28 years is being reviewed - with a view to coming up with more durable, more quality road works for the country.

The Department of Roads this week put in a tender for the designs of now national standards for road construction. According to the advert in the Government Gazette of April 5, 2012, the new designs will inform what road types and geometric designs to be followed, as well as what materials and pavement designs should be adopted for our roads. The new design is also required to inform on issues of water and drainage, which has been an eyesore on Botswana roads for years now. Other components of the new designs are bridges and structures, road markings and road furniture.
