Gov't engages private sector on NDP-10

With diamond revenue expected to drop in the next 10 years, government is now looking at the private sector as a partner in development. This emerged at the Government Implementation Coordination Office (GICO) meeting called to brief the private sector chiefs on progress made in the drafting of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) policy.

GICO director general, Moses Lekaukau, told the gathering that government alone could not bring developments to the people of this country. He said that it was clear that the private sector needed to be engaged and strengthened to make Botswana a private sector-driven economy.

He revealed that National Development Plan 10 (NDP-10), which starts next year, will be longer than its predecessors, as it will take the country to 2016 (seven years), whilst other NDPs had taken five years. He said government wants to realise sustainable development by 2016.  Representatives of the private sector were from commercial banks, fund managers, insurance companies and others.
