Govt & Balete fight over land

Hemmed in on all sides, BaLete - who have by far the smallest tribal land area other than BaTlokwa - must hold dearly to a freehold farm they bought in 1925.

The government and the Ba-Ga-MaLete tribe could be headed for a collision. At the heart of the controversy is land - prime hectares of it - south of Gaborone.

The farm Forest Hill or 9 KO measures 2,229.6727 hectares. The already acute land shortage in the capital and in Ramotswa, the principal town of BaLete, has resulted in a stalemate between the government and the tribespeople over this piece of land that lies south of Gaborone in Kgale.
