He explained that going to China had provided an opportunity to learn from that country’s approach towards improving livelihoods, with particular emphasis on practical models that could be adapted to uplift communities and improve service delivery in the district. Nkhwane added the delegation was exposed to initiatives focusing on renewable energy, affordable housing and revitalisation of rural service centres. According to him, the lessons drawn from the visit could play a significant role in strengthening the district’s socio-economic resilience whilst addressing some of its development challenges. “These lessons are relevant to Goodhope because they offer adaptable ideas for strengthening socio-economic resilience and improving service delivery,” he said when addressing councillors recently.
The council chairperson noted that engagements with Chinese institutions, development agencies, and private-sector entities had identified three potential areas of investment for the district, namely affordable housing, renewable energy and modern service infrastructure. He said the investment opportunities could help transform the district’s development landscape if successfully pursued. Of particular interest, Nkhwane revealed interest in developing 1,000 affordable residential units to address the growing demand for decent, accessible accommodation in the district. The proposed housing development, he said, could provide a practical response to the district’s growing accommodation needs whilst also contributing to broader socio-economic development.
