Ghana VP hits at African leaders

ACCRA: The Ghanaian vice president, Alhaji Aliu Mahama has blamed the African leadership for the poverty and deprivation that bedevils the continent. He accused the African leaders of being pre-occupied with how to retain power for life.

He said the leaders preside over corruption, maladministration and socio-economic deprivation of the people. Mahama was speaking at the start of a three-day African Peer Review Mechanism (QPRM) continental conference held in Accra under the theme: Africa's Bold March to Capture the 21st Century - The role of the APRM.

The APRM is widely seen as a bold and courageous attempt by African countries to address challenges of governance. It was instituted by the New Economic Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) in March 2003.  Since then, 26 African countries have signed APRM  Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
