General election perks to be taxed

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Allowances that will be given to polling officers and presiding officers who will be taking part in the coming general election will be taxed.

This was revealed by Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) principal revenue officer, Gilbert Chilumee during a workshop held for presiding and polling officers in Selebi-Phikwe.  He advised the officers, who received the information with shock, that they should accept tax because the allowances that they will receive from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will be taxed.

"You will be taxed no matter how small the allowances will be. It is treated as your employment income. Your annual salary income from your employers will determine the tax bracket you fall under. I cannot forgive anyone who does not pay tax because I have been given a mandate to collect tax," Chilumee said.
