Gender equality not overnight affair - envoy

Changing cultural attitudes to women and women's roles in the family, the work place, and society is of paramount importance just as passing laws, United States ambassador to Botswana Katherine Canavan has said. Speaking at the launch of the International Women's Day last week, Canavan also called for patience, saying American experience has shown that it takes many years for equal acceptance of women to take place.

Despite advances women have made in the United Sates, there are still cases where they are not paid equally with men, she said. Canavan added that even chief executive officers of some of the largest companies are still mainly men and the US Congress is still male-dominated.

She said in Britain, Wimbledon has only recently announced that women tennis players will be paid the same as their men counterparts after 129 years of inequality.
"Although I don't think it will take 129 years for Batswana women to achieve equality, it will take time."
