GCC legalises multiple burials

Gaborone residents can now bury as many as three bodies in one grave, as the Gaborone City Council (GCC) has passed its 2012 Cemetery By-law.

The by-law also allows families to bury a third coffin in the same grave, provided public health, soil type, ground rock formation, and depth of water table have been taken into consideration.

However, the law makes it clear that simultaneous burial of two bodies in two different coffins in a single grave may be permitted provided the deceased are husband and wife, siblings, or unmarried couple where there is a joint testamentary direction for such burial.
