Gaddafi's camels now at Tsabong Camel Park

Three camels given to former president Festus Mogae as a farewell present by troubled Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi in early 2008 have found a new home at the Tsabong Camel Park. Out of the three camels, two females and one male that Mogae received from Gaddafi, the two females each gave birth to one male and later died, leaving the number of the Libyan camels at three males.

Darker, shorter and broader than the Kgalagadi camels, the camels have now been given to the Tsabong Camel Park, according to Botswana Tourism Organisation public relations and communications manager, Keitumetse Setlang.

Kenyan camel husbandry expert and coordinator of the park's training and husbandry upkeep programme, Dr Christopher Field said the camels have interbred with the Kgalagadi camels, and that their offspring are of intermediate size.  Field said the offspring would be good for camelback safari rides as they are not as tall as the Kgalagadi camels.  On whether the offspring will be stronger than the pure camels, Field said it was still not clear.
