Gabs-Tlokweng Road To Become Dual Carriageway

Government has decided to turn the Tlokweng-Gaborone road, one of the most congested highways in the capital city, into a dual carriageway, Department of Roads' project coordinator Jacob Sello has confirmed to Monitor.

He said work on the stretch from the Polytechnic roundabout to the Tlokweng-Zeerust border gate would start next January.
The expansion, according to the project supervisor, will take 30 months.
Sello said the existing Polytechnic circle would also be replaced by traffic lights.
"Construction of Machel Drive and Mobuto Drive (3.4 Km) will also be upgraded to dual carriage way. The upgrading of Machel/Mobuto Drives and Tlokweng border post road is expected to begin in January 2008 with," he said.
Sello would not state the total cost of the project because it was yet to go to tender. But Bergstan Africa Consulting and Developing Engineers (Pty) Ltd are the project consultants. The company last week published notices for public consultation meeting regarding the proposed upgrading of the road. In its advert in Friday's Mmegi, the consultants said the project would address the increasing traffic flow within the city.
It is also envisaged that the expansion and upgrading of the road would help minimise congestion as well as road accidents experienced along Mobuto Drive from the University of Botswana (UB) circle.
