Gabs Central BDP won't play ball

Though the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has set tomorrow (Wednesday) as the date for primary elections in Gaborone Central to find a replacement for 'dethroned' candidate Gomolemo Motswaledi, a member of the constituency committee says he and his colleagues will not cooperate with the party in the endeavour.

"Today is the deadline for the submission of nominations," said the Executive Secretary of the BDP, Dr Comma Serema, in an interview yesterday. "Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will vet the names and hold elections on Wednesday." Party president Ian Khama suspended Motswaledi from the party for a period of 60 days last month. The official, who spoke on conditions of anonymity, said the branch would not become party to any effort to replace their preferred candidate.

Four people had collected nomination forms by the afternoon yesterday, according to the National Elections Coordinator (of the BDP) Segaetsho Garekwe. He added that the Gaborone Central branch committee, which is also known as the Committee of 18, was cooperating well with his national elections team.
