JOHANNESBURG: Botswana National Front (BNF) vice president Olebile Gaborone was hailed as a hero this week at the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) when he led an onslaught against the proposed US Africa Command (Africom).

PAP members voted in support of a motion the South East MP tabled to request African governments through the African Union not to accede to the US desire to host Africom in the continent. Gaborone said that Africa needs to be weaned from dependency on the developed countries because it is rich in natural resources and can sustain itself. He talked of how the US once labeled former South African president Nelson Mandela a terrorist for fighting for the freedom of black people. "Whatever we decide today should be in the best interest of Africans," he said when moving the motion on Wednesday.

Members debated the matter with high emotions accusing the US government of being behind  the majority of wars and military coups in Africa and the world. They said the US is only interested in protecting its interests and nothing else. The MPs said that Africa is grappling with poverty and needs help in health, education, economic and development issues. "The US must address global warming, poverty eradication, developments, education and health issues," one MP said.
