The Gaborone Central Police Station is investigating reports of a series of gang rapes and defilement by pupils at a school in the city. Reports have it that male pupils at the school have been defiling and raping their female counterparts in turns and Superintendant Takongwa Mazwiduma confirmed that they have been informed of the matter by concerned parents.

The parents got the shocking news last Wednesday when they got letters from the school asking them to an urgent meeting. On arrival, they were told that seven male pupils have been sexually abusing about 20 girls in their class. Most parents did not turn up for the meeting because of other commitments but they got a rude shock later in the day when they received calls from a police officer investigating the case. It is said the abuse has been going on since January. A father of one of the girls wondered how such a thing can happen in the school in broad daylight. "How can something like this happen in broad daylight in a class that is on one block with about two classrooms and facing the other block? Where were the teachers because you cannot tell me that they spend most of their time in workshops? One teacher should have noticed this and the headmaster could have taken appropriate action," said the father (name withheld to protect the minor).

He explained that their girl has tried to tell them but they brushed her off. "I remember her requesting me to transfer her from that school because there were boys that were harassing the girls in her class. She did not explain the kind of harassment and I just thought she was being silly," concurred the mother. Then a few weeks later, she received the letter summoning her to an urgent meeting at the school but she failed to attend because of work commitments. She then received a call from a police officer investigating the reports. "He was asking me why we do not want to take this issue seriously but then I did not know what he was talking about and he explained," she said.
