Gaborone hosts first ACTA conference

The African Council for Tourism and Automobile (ACTA) will hold a conference in Gaborone next week to chart a road map based on the global objective of reducing road crashes by at least 50 percent by 2020, Emergency Assist 991 managing director Simon Modisaeman has said.

He stated that the conference on September 6 will be the first of its kind in Botswana. He said the attainment of the global objective will occupy centre-stage at the ACTA conference. The conference will be held under the auspices of the Federation International Automobile (FIA). It will discuss automobile issues in the African continent. "As an African umbrella body, we meet once every year to discuss pertinent issues," he said. FIA, the main sponsors of the safe mobility conference, provides advice on issues relate to tourism, road safety and motor sport. The FIA president John Todt will be present at the conference.

On September 6, ACTA will host a business consultative process with the government, civil society and other stakeholders on road safety. The focus of the event will be on upholding the UN 'decade of road safety, a core principle adopted by the Department of Road Transport and Safety to reduce road accidents by 50 percent by 2020, Modisaeman said.
