Gaborone deputy mayor Haskins Nkayigwa shocked people at the city full council meeting yesterday when he said Batswana professionals do not need white people to guide them to do a good job.

The deputy mayor was responding to a presentation to the council by mapping and surveying director Bareng Malatsi. The director was accompanied by an official from the Swedish land authority, Ake Sinnstrom. In his response to the presentation, Nkayigwa said, "It was a brilliant presentation. He did not need a Swedish person sitting next to him to do such great work. I do agree that it is difficult to change people's mindsets, for example a lot of people are finding it hard to understand the fact that we don't need white people to develop. We don't need them," he said.

Malatsi's presentation was on the P55 million land database project by the Lands and Housing Ministry. Nkayigwa said street names are important and he appreciated the fact that the presentation pointed out that there are African countries like South Africa and Zimbabwe which are advanced in this respect as they have street names marking locations, enabling one to navigate their way through places using a Global Positioning System (GPS).
