Gabane youth recreation centre takes off

Gabane youth have cause to celebrate after the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture released funds for the purchase of recreational equipment aimed at curbing juvenile delinquency. The youths have been calling for such facilities in their area.

The recreational equipment will include chess sets, table tennis, badminton, gymnastics and body building equipment, a pool, a television set, DVD player and a VCR.  A 10-member committee, headed by Thabo Komane, has also been elected to run the centre.

"Our committee was elected early this month and we are in the process of drawing a constitution. Our committee consists of three men and seven women. The constituency office, councillors and Village Development Committee (VDC) members are helping us draw up the constitution. By next week our youth officer will be working here, so this centre will be directly under him," Komane said.  Komane said they decided to purchase indoor games only as they do not have land from which to operate outdoor activities. At the moment the youth officer's caravans and VDC are housed at the community hall.
