A spate of robberies hit Gaborone West over the weekend. In one of the cases, a 28 year-old woman was admitted at the Princess Marina Hospital with a fractured thigh following a botched robbery.

According to the Gaborone West Police station commander, Agreement Mapeu, the woman and three male accomplices who were travelling in a car, attempted to rob a motorist along the Gaborone/Gabane road on Saturday evening.

Mapeu said the couple who were targeted were driving in front of the vehicle of the would be robbers. He said when the vehicle slowed down for a pedestrian, the one behind sped past and blocked it.

He said the occupants of the car alighted to confront a man and a woman who were in the blocked car, and robbed the couple of a bag containing cellphones among other items.  He said the robbers took foot as other motorists came to the rescue of the robbed couple.  He said during the commotion, a woman who was with the robbers attempted to flee but fell down.   She was hit by a moving car and sustained a broken thigh.

Mapeu said three male accomplices were arrested at the scene and are in police custody.  He revealed that the arrested men are two Batswana and a Zimbabwean citizen.   The police officer told Mmegi that the two Batswana are backing dancers for local  artists.  He said investigations into the matter are continuing as the other suspect has been admitted to hospital.

In another case, Mapeu said three men alighted from a Mogoditshane combi near Molapo crossing, to rob a man who was waiting at the bus stop. The trio who were wielding knives robbed the man of a cellphone and P360 in cash, and then took to their heels and hid in the nearby bush when members of the public rushed to his rescue.  One of the suspects was cornered and has since been detained.

In the third street robbery case, a motorist was robbed after he left his car and took a walk to meet his friend.

He was confronted by three men who robbed him of a cellphone after threatening him with a knife.   The female friend that he had gone to pick, was also robbed.   But a member of the public rescued the couple when he attacked the robbers.  One of the suspects was arrested while the other two fled from the scene.
