Fumbling cop reels off wrong stats for Khama

A fumbling police chief trembled as he found himself reading out escalating crime statistics when he thought he was showing how crime had gone down in Mmokolodi Village where President Ian Khama was addressing his maiden kgotla meeting last Friday.

The Commander of Old Naledi Police Station, Superintendent Molatlhwa, was booed by cabinet ministers and senior government officials as he proudly reeled off exponential crime statistics after a preamble that promised declining crime rates linked to the introduction of volunteer policing that has tapped into the Ipelegeng programme.

Superintendent Molatlhwa had started well by narrating how 14 officers employed under Ipelegeng had helped reduce crime in the village dramatically. However, things took on a negative aspect when the figures he read out clearly contradicted his glowing preamble, prompting a chorus of boos from the President's entourage.
