'Friendly' Mokobaxane braces for by-election

MOKOBOXANE - The panoramic view of Mokobaxane village is only a faade that camouflages the problems besieging this tiny Boteti sub-district village about 60 km north westwards and 10km from Mopipi.

Tribal groupings in the village include the Badeti, Herero and Bakalanga in the seven wards that make up Mokobaxane.Legend has it that Mokobaxane used to house cattle posts for the Boteti elite in the early 1960s until the early 1980s when people began to set up permanent structures.

My trip from Francistown to the village started on Wednesday morning. I boarded a bus to Letlhakane village armed with my camera and a note pad. A trip to Mokobaxane comes with little hardships. It took me nearly one-and-a-half hours to reach Letlhakane, 240km from Francistown. From Letlhakane you can board any bus that passes through the village to either Rakops or Maun. I jumped on a JNG bus to Maun and was dropped off by the roadside on reaching Mokobaxane, which is bracing for a by-election next month. It took me nearly 40 minutes to reach the village, which is 60km from Letlhakane. The village is miniscule indeed with an estimated population of only 1,000 people with the Herero being the dominant tribe.
