Free movement invites crime and dearth of goods

GABORONE: Botswana ratified the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) protocol on free movement of people in 2007, amid fears that nationals of neighbouring countries fleeing economic crisis might swamp its small population.

While those sentiments were prevalent, the political leadership went ahead and told pessimists that the ideal thing was to open up the borders as part of the global village.

As a founding member state of SADC and one on whose soil stands the headquarters, Botswana expected foreign income from SADC nationals to result in the creation and sustainability of employment opportunities and a booming economy as more and more people poured into the country.
