Former death row inmates removed from cells

Former death row inmates Michael Molefhe and Brandon Sampson have been removed from death row cells after their death sentences were quashed following the sucessful outcome of their appeal.

Last month, the Special Session of Court of Appeal quashed the death sentence of Molefhe and Sampson and replaced it with a 20-year jail term. The sentence was backdated to December 25, 2000 the time when they were taken into custody. Effectively, the duo will serve 10 years behind bars.

Department of Prisons and Rehabilitation spokesperson, Wamorena Ramolefhe said after the court order that the duo serve custodial sentences rather than death sentences, they were accordingly removed from the death row cells. "They have been removed from the death row cells and are now with other inmates serving the remainder of their sentence", Ramolefhe said.
