Former Commander's Bodyguard Jailed 12 Months For Attempted Murder

FRANCISTOWN: Former Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Commander Matshenyego Fisher's bodyguard was last Friday sentenced to an effective 12 months' imprisonment on three counts of attempted murder.

Justice Mpaphi Phumaphi found Koboyatladi Thero guilty of attempting to kill three of his colleagues Otsile Matshameko, Moalafhi Kgabisa and Samuel Radikolane on January 15, 2005 at Area W Second Brigade BDF Camp by shooting at them. Thero (30), a former member of General Fisher's escort, had entered a plea of not guilty on all  three counts.

In his judgement, Justice Phumaphi noted that attempted murder is a serious offence which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. He said before the offence, Thero had been nursing a grudge, "rightly or wrongly", against his Commander (Lieutenant General Fisher); the accused person had been bottled up.
