Foreign inmates demand ARVs

FRANCISTOWN: A South African prisoner (name withheld) has pleaded with Labour and Home Affairs Minister, Peter Siele to facilitate the enrolment of eligible foreign inmates in Anti-Retroviral (ARV) therapy.

The South African was speaking on behalf of 535 inmates at the Francistown Prisons courtyard last Saturday during Siele's tour of prisons facilities.

He accused the Botswana government of contravening WHO provisions on health. He said Botswana is generally violating human and political rights of inmates in denying eligible prisoners ARV drugs. "How can Botswana allow prisoners to die just like that mainly because there was no provision for foreign inmates to access ARVs?," he wondered.
