Forced to marry in community of property

FRANCISTOWN: As wedding couples trouped into Molepolole community hall in their finery, accompanied by witnesses and relatives on Independence eve, September 29, no-one expected the scene that was soon to unfold as one groom determinedly informed the District Commissioner (DC) that he was being forced to marry in community of property.

The DC, Itumeleng Gabaake had started the session by giving the couples free lessons on marriage life, she also enumerated types of marriages explaining the differences. As the DC began asking the couples if they were marrying in community of property of their own volition, she eventually zoomed in on a couple in their 40s or 50s asking the same questions she had asked the others.

Startting with the groom the DC asked: "Manoele Monametsi*, how true is it that you are marrying Lenngane Montsho* in community of property?" In response Monametsi sighed: "Hei! Yes it is true but I was forced to do this....". He had not finished his sentence before the murmurs started in the crowd with many craning their necks to get a better look at the couple as the bride bowed her head.
