Food vendors cry as new cooking oil prices bite

FRANCISTOWN: As most people worry about escalating food prices others cry about the prices of cooking oil. These people are mostly women who survive by selling food in the morning and at lunchtime.

They say that since the rise in food prices, the cost of cooking oil has also rocketed as well, thus throwing their small-scale businesses into turmoil. Cooking oil prices have shot up by about 150 percent in the past few months.

Food vendor Senzeni Majita, who claims that she has been selling fat cakes for nine years, says she had never seen prices rise at such a rate before. "Prices have risen and gone down since I have been in this business but I had never seen anything like this. I feel like I am giving my fat cakes away at the moment," she says. The 47-year-old Majita owns a tuck shop in Block 4 in Francistown where people flock to buy her fat cakes and fresh chips.
