Authorities at Botswana Police College are investigating a case of abortion after a foetus was found in a rubbish skip at the trainees' residence halls.

The discovery of the foetus comes barely a week after the graduation of police constables at the college last Friday. According to the PRO of Botswana Police Service (BPS), Christopher Mbulawa, the foetus has yet to be taken for medical analysis to determine its age, among other things.

Mbulawa said everyone who was at the college over the weekend would be interviewed as part of investigations. However, college authorities were not aware of any trainee being pregnant. Mbulawa said if such a person had been among the trainees, they would not have been admitted for the programme. According to the Penal Code, the maximum punishment for the crime of abortion is life imprisonment.
