Fluorescent lamps could ease SADC power shortages

NDOLA: The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) is expected to experience a crippling power shortage, which will take years to reverse because electricity projects are capital-intensive.

Wary of this situation, utility companies in the region have already resorted to load shedding. ZESCO, the electricity company in Zambia which has been allowed to increase electricity tariffs for three consecutive years from now, has produced a brochure showing people how they can conserve power. The strategy will not only allow consumers to conserve electricity, but it is also one way in which consumers will be helped cut their electricity expenditures.

Customers have been advised to switch from ordinary bulbs to Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) that save power consumption by one-fifth and have durability of over three years.
