FRANCISTOWN: After dithering for some time, Francistown City Council (FCC) has gone for broke by awarding a tender to a private company to clean up the Central Business District (CBD).

The Mayor James Kgalajwe says FCC recently awarded a tender to a private company to clean up the city and that they have engaged Ipelegeng workers in the wards. He, however, could not disclose the name of the company at the time of going to press, as the company had still not yet started operations.Ever since the beginning of this year, residents have complained about the unkempt state of the city while the political wing of the council and its administration have been at loggerheads as to how to handle the issue of street cleaning and garbage collection.

"We know that the city is dirty and we have since engaged a private company to take care of the CBD. That tender has been awarded," he said. Councillors and council staff could not see eye to eye on the method of tendering and hiring hence the suspension of the street tender that resulted in the city drowning in trash. The tender that the councillors felt was most effective ended in April 30 and from then it had been conflicts between the two wings of the city council, with councillors insisting that management was benefiting from a certain tendering and hiring process. Councillors insisted that they preferred the manner of hiring that was being used before that they termed 70:30 ratio, which suggested that once a contractor was awarded a tender they could bring 30 percent of the workforce while the other 70 percent had to be hired from the ward at the expense of the city council.
