Farmers reluctant to slaughter cattle

FRANCISTOWN: Since Francistown Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) re-opened for slaughter, farmers have been reluctant to bring their cattle resulting in the slow take-off of operations at the company.

Francistown BMC was scheduled to begin operations on October 17 to commence slaughter on October 24, but BMC CEO Dr David Falepau says that they only received 26 cattle, which was not enough to start.

"We commenced taking bookings on October 17, for slaughter at Francistown commencing Monday 24 as planned, unfortunately by Monday we had only received 26 cattle," he said.  He added that last year the BMC feedlot programme was critical towards ensuring slaughter of cattle at the Francistown abattoir at this time of the year.
